Mortgage lending in June was at its highest level in more than a year, new figures reveal.
Produced by the Bank of England (BoE), the statistics show that mortgage approvals for home purchases totalled 47,584 over the 30-day period.
This was a rise from the 44,169 approvals in May and was the highest level since April last year.
Meanwhile, remortgaging was also up, with a total of 35,011 approvals given in June, compared with 31,874 the previous month.
Responding to the figures, Howard Archer, chief UK and European Economist at IHS Global Insight, said: "It is mortgage approvals that are seen as the key forward looking indicator for housing market activity.
"The BoE data indicates that the ongoing gradual upward trend in housing market activity remains intact."
However, lending activity was still "very low" in June compared with pre-recession levels, he added.
In its latest market commentary, the Council of Mortgage Lenders said that the UK`s mortgage market remains weak.
