Mortgage lending levels in the UK are still "very low", an expert has said.
Sarah Robson of the Council of Mortgage Lenders made her comments in the wake of British Bankers` Association figures, which indicated that the number of mortgages approved in February of this year was up by 16.1 per cent compared with the previous month.
However, lending was still 30.6 per cent down compared with February 2008.
Ms Robson said: "If you look at the figures, the lending is still at a very low level compared [with] previous years and it may be an indication [of an upturn, but] what it doesn`t show is the picture of what is happening in the rest of the market."
She added that the UK`s mortgage market would need to see an increase in lending over several months in order for people to be able to say there has been a "turnaround".
