Gambling `should not be promoted to clear debts`

New guidelines to control the portrayal of gambling in advertisements should not promote the activity as a way to get out of debt, it was claimed today.

The stipulation accompanies today`s announcement that the current ban on gambling advertisements on television and radio is to be lifted in favour of strict guidelines on the practice.

Part of the government`s Gambling Act, the new regulations aim to protect children and "vulnerable members of society".

In addition to the provision regarding debt, other conditions of the new rules state that no one under 25 years old can appear in a gambling advertisement and the practice can not be portrayed as an escape from personal problems or be linked to improved sexual prowess.

Roger Wisbey, secretary of the Committee of Advertising Practice and the Broadcast Committee of Advertising Practice, said: "Of paramount importance is making sure that the advertising gambling restrictions provide a high level of consumer protection."

Last week, councillor Norman Davies told the Solihull News that he feared that opening a casino in the town could lead to an increase in debt problems.
