Generous Scots spreading festive cheer
03/12/2007
Consumers in Scotland are more generous when giving Christmas presents than in all other parts of the UK, new research shows.
Scots fork out an average of £480 each on Christmas gifts, which is £125 more than those in the south-east of the UK, a study by Abbey has found.
Such spending by Scots could lead to debt problems in the near future, as well as a need for professional debt advice. Those in Wales and the south-west of England spend £415 each, while the average Brit spends £116 on their children and £104 on a loved one.
Steve Shore, head of banking at Abbey, said: "Not surprisingly, children top the bill as parents splash out at Christmas, but interestingly there were also quite significant regional differences. Scotland in particular broke their stereotype and those with Scottish relatives look set to have a very merry festive season indeed."
Last week, research published by Sainsbury`s bank found that £6 billion has already been spent on the run up to Christmas by consumers across the UK.
