Consumers in the Scottish area of Fife have one of the highest levels of debt in the UK, the results of a nationwide survey show.
However, the areas of Motherwell and Kilmarnock faired worse than Fife in a list of the most indebted areas of Britain, Callcredit claims.
Citizens Advice and Fife Council dealt with debt problems totalling £22.7 million during 2006, including credit card debts and mortgage arrears. According to the Courier, more than 3,500 Fifers enquired about professional debt advice during 2006.
Fife Council`s Geoff Bates told the newspaper:"Consumer debt problems have grown with the easier availability of credit. The Fife Council money advice team uses a wide range of methods for assisting clients in a confidential, non-judgmental atmosphere."
According to figures from Credit Action, average personal debt in the UK was £4,554 in September 2007.
