Shoppers in Scotland `hide clothes debt in the closet`
26/06/2007
Some 63 per cent of shoppers in Scotland admit that they are not honest about how much they spend on clothing, according to new research.
A survey by Scottish Widows reveals that shoppers throughout Britain waste an average of £6,044 on clothes and shoes that they do not want.
Those in London, Scotland and the north are the worst when it comes to racking up debts on items which end up gathering dust, the figures indicate.
Mike Hoban, customer and brand marketing director at Scottish Widows, said that refraining from such purchases could help people reduce their debt levels.
"Think about it – for the same cost of that absolute `must-have` new top or trousers you spot in the sales this year, you could be putting some money aside for your future instead," he commented.
Some 80 per cent of Britons say they regularly overspend, according to Credit Action.
