02/09/2008
Research conducted into debt patterns among consumers across the UK has revealed that middle-class families in London and the south-east are the most affected.
According to a survey conducted by credit reference agency Experian, families in the region owe an average of more than £50,000.
It is suggested that people in the area have borrowed nearly four times more than their counterparts in the north-west of England and in Scotland.
Meanwhile, the average debt held by individual consumers is said to have risen by more than £2,000 over the last 12 months alone.
Richmond in Surrey was found to be the area where consumers were most in debt, with individuals in the town owing an average of £53,533, while Putney in London came second in the list at £47,144.
Last month, Which? recommended that consumers can switch mortgage providers and energy suppliers, among other things, in a bid to save money and reduce debt levels.
