Demand for staff in Scotland highest in UK

16/06/2008

The jobs market in Scotland has been described as "stable" in a report by the Bank of Scotland.

The number of permanent staff placements has increased and employment growth has remained largely unchanged in the past three months, the Labour Market Report shows. Employment demand is generally surpassing the UK as a whole.

April saw a slower rate of improvement, with the report`s Labour Market Barometer falling to 53.3 from 53.5. However, the Bank of Scotland`s chief economist, Martin Ellis, said: "Jobs growth in Scotland remains relatively firm despite a moderating in market conditions since last summer."

The nursing, medical and care sector continues to be the most popular for both permanent and temporary staff, with demand "especially firm", according to Mr Ellis.

Permanent-staff salaries rose to an eight-month high in May, while hourly rates of pay for contract and temporary workers increased at the highest rate in nine months.

Meanwhile, ex-workers of Scottish private homecare companies Domiciliary Care and HRM Homecare have expressed concerns about the companies` lack of staff, revealed a BBC Scotland investigation.
