Consumers across the UK spend an average of two years of their life worrying about their debts, according to a new study.
The survey by the Co-Operative Bank found that people worry about their finances - including debt consolidation schemes - for an average of 16,848 hours during their lifetimes.
Almost half of those polled for the research said that they were "concerned or deeply concerned" with their increasing levels of debt, while 80 per cent admitted that they were worried about a lack of savings in the bank.
Scott McPhail, savings product manager at the Co-operative Bank said: "It is worryingly clear from the research that the vast majority of UK adults are deeply concerned about their finances, with rising levels of debt and inadequate saving provisions responsible for countless sleepless nights nationwide."
Recent research from Credit Action found that the average adult owed £4,748 on credit cards and overdrafts at the end of January.
