Consumers running into debt problems with their credit cards could be charged £100 just to transfer credit to a new provider, a new study has found.
Research from MoneyExpert suggested that the average credit card debt is now at £2,666 - meaning that many more consumers could be considering debt consolidation schemes.
And for consumers thinking of switching credit cards, they could incur a charge of £100 if they switch with a balance of more than £3,000
Sean Gardner, chief executive of MoneyExpert, said: "Credit card switching is big business. Someone switches a credit card every two seconds and there are very few cards out there that still do not charge a fee for the privilege."
According to Credit Action, the average UK consumer owed £4,713 in credit card debt, overdrafts and personal loans at the end of December.
