Plans set out to help people in debt

08/02/2009

Plans have been announced to help people living in Wales who are experiencing debt problems.

The proposals were launched by the Minister for Social Justice and Local Government, Dr Brian Gibbons.

They are designed to help people deal with the current economic problems through coordinated action on financial exclusion and debt.

Among the areas addressed by the plan are affordable credit and savings, access to money and debt advice, helping people to improve their financial skills and access to mainstream financial services.

Dr Gibbons commented: "We are fully committed to tackling financial exclusion and over-indebtedness in Wales. This draft strategy aims to address the barriers to financial inclusion and to support those who can least afford to be financially excluded."

Last month, David Kuo, head of personal finance at Fool.co.uk, said that the UK government should step in to address the nation`s "binge borrowing" culture and to stop people`s debt addiction.
