UK mortgage lending remained low in November, it has been suggested.
Figures produced by the Building Societies Association reveal that the amount of lending for home purchases was £2,595 million over the period.
This compared with £4,070 million during the same month in 2007.
In addition, it was found that net lending by building societies over November was £422 million - over £300 million less than the £790 million lent by such organisations 12 months previously.
"With recent figures from the Land Registry suggesting that property prices continued to fall in November and with concerns over job security high, it is no surprise that buyers are keeping out of the market," stated BSA director-general Adrian Coles.
Last month, Peter Bolton King, chief executive of the National Association of Estate Agents, argued that if Britain`s property market is to recover, lenders must make money available to potential homebuyers in the form of mortgages.
