Money worries `overtake crime and immigration`
26/12/2008
The state of the UK economy and the impact of the downturn on personal finances have overtaken issues such as crime, immigration and health as Britons` biggest worries, according to new research.
The figures from Mintel show 54 per cent of UK adults cite the economy as their number one concern, while 44 per cent say personal finance issues are at the top of their agenda.
Crime was the biggest issue for 41 per cent, followed by immigration at 37 per cent and health (30 per cent).
Mintel`s study comes ahead of new data from the Office for National Statistics, which is expected to show a second consecutive quarter of contraction for the UK economy, meaning the country has technically been in recession since July.
The company`s senior consumer analyst, Jonny Forsyth, said personal finance issues comes to the fore during tough times.
"People are now more concerned about the problems that directly impact their day-to-day lives, like money," he said.
"As a result wider societal problems, such as immigration and crime, now seem far less pressing."
