Debt problems mount for UK consumers

The UK`s debt problems have grown to an all-time record high, new research has revealed.
According to Credit Action, the average household owed £8,985 excluding mortgages in December, but that figures rises to £20,895 if the average is based on the number of households who actually have some form of unsecured loan.
Including mortgages, the average household in the UK owed £56,558, while 40 per cent of mortgage borrowers have debts in excess of £90,000.
Total UK personal debt rocketed to £1,409 billion during the last month of 2007, an increase of 9.3 per cent over the year.
