19/12/2007

One in ten Britons are seeking professional debt advice after not paying off what they owe from Christmas 2006, a new study has suggested.

The figures by MoneyExpert suggest that a total of 4.4 million Brits could still be suffering as a result of financial excesses from the last festive season.

Consumers aged between 35 and 44 are the most likely to still be suffering a financial hangover, with 16 per cent saying they have not paid for last Christmas. However, 54 per cent of British consumers said that they got into no debt during Christmas 2006.

Sean Gardner, chief executive of MoneyExpert, said: "It is not time to cancel Christmas but for millions of us it really is time to cancel some credit cards. We can all give into temptation at Christmas and put it on plastic but if the debt lingers from year to year you`re starting to get into trouble."

Last minute Christmas shopping is likely to cost Britons some £11.85 billion this year, according to Sainsbury`s Bank.
