Online shoppers `avoid festive stresses`

11/12/2007

Stressed-out shoppers will turn to the internet more than ever this festive season to avoid the strains of the Christmas rush, new research shows.

In an effort to control seasonal spending, which soars out of control for many shoppers, online stores are reporting a rise in visitors, with Abbey finding that 36 per cent of Brits will shop online this Christmas.

Almost one fifth of men get their shopping done in one day, while over one third of shoppers are cutting back on festive shopping due to rising debt problems. The average person will take three trips to shopping centres to complete their gift hunting.

Roger Lovering, managing director of Abbey Credit Cards, said: "Reducing tension is paramount and consequently we`re seeing retailers such as supermarkets making it easier to buy everything from puddings to presents under one roof or website."

According to comScore, shoppers in the US and the UK have so far spent a combined $18 billion (£8.79 billion) on festive gifts online.
