Former yuppies now worrying about their finances
19/11/2007
Young professionals who enjoyed wealth in the 1980s are worried about their financial situation now despite their former status, a new poll has revealed.
So-called yuppies are now so concerned about their financial status, after years of high spending, that many are turning to professionals for debt advice, the survey by LV= suggests.
Despite high earnings, 40 per cent of former yuppies admit they did not save enough of their pay packet, while 14 per cent confess they did not think about retirement until they were in their 30s.
Nigel Snell, communications director of LV=, said: "Despite the champagne lifestyle and optimism of the time, our research reveals that many former high flyers have ended up no better off than the average midlife family. They are just as worried about meeting the monthly bills, the cost of bringing up their kids and how they will fund their old age."
The term yuppie was coined in 1982 but was phased out after several high profile financial market crashes.
