Tills to jingle to the tune of £53bn this Christmas
16/11/2007
Consumers across the UK will spend an estimated £53 billion over the festive period this year, according to new research.
A predicted 4.2 per cent increase in spending, compared to 2006 figures, is likely to see many consumers look for professional debt advice in the new year.
The vast majority of spending will be done through debit cards, as consumers shun increased interest rates on credit cards, APACS, the UK`s payments association, said. The biggest shift in trends is expected to be online, with an estimated 55.6 per cent growth in internet-based sales.
Sandra Quinn, director of communications at APACS, said: "Whether buying the turkey or stocking fillers, we`re most likely to be using our debit card to pay for them this Christmas, continuing the ongoing trend of pulling out the debit card in preference to our credit cards, cash or cheques."
APACS members account for 97 per cent of the total UK payments market.
