Dismay at chancellor`s lack of help for debtors
10/10/2007
A major high street building society has expressed its dismay that the chancellor`s pre-Budget report did not offer any help for those in need of debt advice.
As part of a wide-ranging report by chancellor of the exchequer Alistair Darling, a raft of new incentives were announced - including a doubling of the threshold for inheritance tax and closing taxation loopholes.
However, Nationwide has slammed Mr Darling for not announcing anything to help with the rising total of personal debts in the UK, with many people now seeking debt advice.
Nationwide did, however, cautiously welcome the chancellor`s plans to increase the limits on individual savings accounts (Isas).
Graham Beale, Nationwide chief executive, said: "While Nationwide welcomes the increase to Isa limits announced in the 2007 Budget, we are disappointed that the chancellor did not go further in his pre-Budget report to encourage and promote savings through Isas."
According to Credit Action, the average household debt in the UK, including mortgages, is £56,309.
