`Expert help essential` when dealing with debts

04/10/2007

A major financial organisation has advised those in debt not to panic and to turn to expert help if they find their problems are becoming too big.

As personal debts reach record high levels, the Association of British Credit Unions (ABCUL) has claimed that financial institutions exist to help out those most in need.

Those in debt must make sure they avoid all unnecessary financial dangers, including taking consolidatory loans from a "door step lender". Careful analysis of all financial dealings, including loans, is essential so that the borrower does not fall into "unmanageable debt", the head of membership services at ABCUL claimed.

Lucia Webster added: "Often people who have looked in to their finances can see that credit is not what they need, but rather advice on how to manage their income more effectively."

ABCUL is a trade association for credit unions in England, Scotland and Wales.
