Brits `stash cash at home`

28/09/2007

More than three-quarters of British people admit to hiding money in their homes instead of putting it in a bank account, a new poll suggests.

The average Brit hoards away £127 in a variety of places around the house, with eight per cent of those polled saying they hid between £300 and £1,000, Cornhill Direct found.

While debt advisors would suggest putting money in a bank rather than keeping it at home, 40 per cent of the 1,500 polled thought that storing money at home was a good idea. Over 45 per cent of people thought the recent financial troubles will increase the amount people keep in their homes.

Mark Bishop, a spokesman for Cornhill Direct, said: "It is never a good idea to keep large sums in the house."

Cornhill Direct was established in 1995 and is part of Allianz Insurance, one of the largest general insurers in the UK
