Customers `to be warned about approaching overdraft limits`
11/09/2007
A major high street bank is to alert customers when withdrawing money if they are getting too close to their overdraft limit.
HSBC has announced that all its 3,500 ATMs in the UK are to tell current account holders that they are likely to incur a fee if the money they withdraw takes them over the agreed overdraft limit.
Starting on October 1st, HSBC will not charge an arrangement fee if a customer`s daily requests total £10 or less and will not charge more than one fee per day. HSBC said the move was part of its commitment to bringing transparency to its fees and charges.
Joe Garner, general manager HSBC personal financial services, said: "More than 95 per cent of HSBC cash withdrawals are now made at ATMs. We believe that by alerting customers at this point will enable them to make an informed choice about whether to proceed."
In related news, the Daily Telegraph reports that a key HSBC investor has attacked a management bonus scheme, which rewards directors with bonuses of up to seven times their salary even if shareholders see little return.
