Debt and stress `leading to health problems`
02/08/2007
A combination of high levels of debt and stress at work have been leading to an increase in mental health problems, it has been suggested.
Welsh secretary of the British Medical Association Dr Richard Lewis told the Western Mail that such health complications occur "inevitably" from these factors.
"A combination of increased stress in the workplace and private lives, with the accumulation of debt and worry about debt, will lead to increased anxiety and mental health-related illnesses," he remarked.
His comments come after new figures from the Association of Business Recovery Professionals reveal that the average Briton owes £9,455 on credit cards, loans and overdrafts.
Derek Walker, head of policy and campaigns for Wales TUC, suggested to the publication that low salaries could play a part in rising debt problems.
The Bank of England`s monetary policy committee is due to decide today (August 2nd) whether it will increase interest rates.
