Some couples `use credit checks before marriage`
24/07/2007
Some couples are using credit checks to ensure that they do not bring any debt problems into their new marriages, it has been claimed.
Even though many people live together before marriage, they may still operate separate bank accounts and manage their finances separately, according to the Sun.
Melanie Mitchley, director of industry relations at financial checks firm Callcredit, said that making sure both partners do not have a bad credit rating is part of preparing for a happy union.
"Money is the number one potential relationship breaker, so by starting off on the right foot and checking their credit reports, the new Mr and Mrs have made a wise move in ensuring that there will be no nasty financial surprises," she commented.
"We recommend people take care when they’re entering into joint financial arrangements, as a partner’s finances could affect you for up to six years following any split."
The average cost of a UK wedding is £11,000, according to weddingguideuk.com.
