Budgeting `helps couples avoid wedding debt`
10/07/2007
Following a budget can help wedding planners avoid overspending and prevent them from starting their life together with high levels of debt, it has been suggested.
Carol Richardson, PR manager for wedding planning website Confetti, said that a budget helps people "break down all of the elements" of the ceremony so some can be cut back if necessary.
Saving for a wedding is also advisable, she said, to avoid financial problems.
"Many people do choose to pay for their weddings themselves, so they usually save a little bit beforehand," she said.
"It is best to save as much as you can. It`s best not to start married life in debt."
A recent study by moneysupermarket.com found that more than 40 per cent of couples planning their nuptials had decided to use credit card debt to pay for the ceremony.
Meanwhile, the Conservative party is to unveil a proposal for tax breaks for married people, which could benefit those who are looking to tie the knot.
