Nearly half of Britons `would lend to a friend in debt`
29/06/2007
Many people in the UK would lend as much money as they could afford to a friend who had debts, according to a new study.
Research from CreditExpert.co.uk reveals that 42 per cent of people would extend some financial support to their friend who owed money - and this figure rises to 47 per cent in London.
Additionally, the survey indicates that 47 per cent of Britons would buy a drink for every member of a large drinking group, which etiquette expert Liz Brewer describes as overly generous behaviour.
It is better etiquette - and represents more responsible behaviour - to form smaller groups to pay for each other`s drinks, Ms Brewer explains.
Jim Hodgkins, managing director of CreditExpert.co.uk, says that such decisions can have implications on personal debt.
"We`re regularly faced with financial etiquette dilemmas and, as well as being important from a social standpoint, they`re also significant financially," he remarks.
"If you`re running up debts that you can`t pay off, you could be damaging your credit rating."
