Holiday spending `sends travellers into debt`

31/05/2007

Millions of Britons get into debt when paying for their holidays, according to new research.

A study by Experian`s credit monitoring service Credit Expert found that 12 million people in the UK accumulate debt to fund their holiday spending.

More than one-quarter of those polled said they pay for their trip with credit, such as a loan, credit card or overdraft.

Indeed, six per cent of respondents admit that they go into debt most times or every time they go on holiday.

Jim Hodgkins, managing director of CreditExpert.co.uk, commented: "It`s worrying that, as a nation, many of us have a `me now, debt later` attitude to our finances.

"Most of us work hard and need a well-earned break, but it`s important that we plan ahead and ensure our bank balance can handle the large outgoings that holidays and other expenses entail."

The next bank holiday in the UK will take place on August 27th.
