Tenants with arrears `at the end of the queue`
15/05/2007
Tenants in Kirklees with current or previous arrears will have obstacles to obtaining council houses, according to a cabinet member.
A "lower priority" will be given to those who are still in arrears, while those with lesser debts will have to agree to pay off what they owe if they want a council house in the West Yorkshire borough.
Counsellor Khizar Iqbal, Kirklees cabinet member for housing, explained: "I want to reaffirm that former tenants still in arrears will … have a lower priority when it comes to being allocated a house.
"People who have previous arrears of £175 or below will have to make a commitment when applying to pay off their debts if they are offered a house."
Those with higher debts will be lower on the list until they reduce their debts to that level, he added.
However, he said that some exceptions, for example in cases in which a potential tenant is fleeing domestic violence, will be granted.
Kirklees is divided into 23 wards with three counsellors apiece.
