People `avoid debt by borrowing responsibly`
15/05/2007
People are becoming more responsible with their credit cards, which helps them avoid debt, the spokesperson for the UK trade associations for payments said today.
Mark Bowerman, spokesperson for Apacs, was commenting after a CreditExpert study indicated that nearly one in ten Britons has taken out another credit card to repay debts on an existing card.
He explained that people "are becoming more responsible" with credit card spending, which is evidenced by the fact that consumers use their debit cards more frequently than their credit cards.
Additionally, he said that "responsible borrowing" could help people avoid getting into debt, which should be accompanied by "responsible lending" on the part of the card provider.
The percentage of people who pay their bills completely every month hovers around 59 per cent, remarked Mr Bowerman.
In related news, Apacs recently announced that contactless credit and debit cards would be rolled out from September 2007.
