Anderston - the debt capital of Scotland
26/04/2010
Following research by CACI, a market research firm, Anderston in Glasgow has been named as Scotland`s `most debt-ridden community`, The Times reports.
The statistics revealed that the district on the western edges of the city centre ranks top of a `league table of debt`.
Almost one in five (19.2% of) residents of Anderston owes more than £15,000 in unsecured loans. This is closely followed by the Calton area of Glasgow - where 17.4% of residents carry unsecured debts of more than £15,000, while in Dunfermline South and Greater Pollok, the figure falls to 16.5% of residents.
These figures contrast with the debt statistics in Orkney, where just 7% of residents owe more than £15,000.
The Labour parliamentary candidate for Glasgow Central, Anas Sarwar, said: "This is very concerning. We need to make sure we are supporting families and individuals who get themselves in difficulty with debt."
