Third of struggling borrowers `hiding debt from loved ones`
08/04/2010
30% of people struggling with debt without seeking help are keeping the problem from their family and friends, according to a new report.
Insolvency trade body R3, also known as the Association of Business Recovery Professionals, found that 19% of those struggling "can`t even face opening their bills", with a further 21% saying they "didn`t know where to go for help".
R3 President Peter Sargent said: "Even after a long recession, people are still terrified to `own up` to debt problems. Yet this ultimately makes the issue worse."
An expert at Debt Advisers Direct emphasised the importance of not delaying getting help with problem debts.
"All delaying the problem does is gives the debts longer to grow, and on high-interest debts this can be especially serious. Struggling borrowers should discuss their situation with an independent debt adviser at the first opportunity."
