Mortgage lending drops to decade low
23/02/2010
According to figures from the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML), the amount of mortgage debt being taken on has dropped to a decade low.
January`s gross mortgage lending was 21% lower than it was during the same period a year earlier, and 32% lower than December`s figure.
Although a drop in the amount of new mortgage debt is expected at the beginning of the year, January`s fall `brought lending to its lowest level since February 2000`.
Economist for the CML, Paul Samter, said: "We remain in a period of uncertainty for the housing market and economy at large. The market certainly improved over the second half of last year and started 2010 in better shape than most would have predicted twelve months ago.
"More recent developments have been influenced by the end of the stamp duty holiday, and are likely to foreshadow a larger than usual seasonal drop off in activity in the early part of this year."
