Businesswomen turn down credit `to avoid debt`
26/04/2007
Women business owners who turn down the option of banks loans and lines of credit do so because they prefer not to carry debt, new research reveals.
Avoiding debt was one of the top reasons for female entrepreneurs rejecting these financial products as a source of financial capital, according to the US-based Centre for Women`s Business Research.
The study also indicates that the desire of women to not risk their family or personal assets was also a reason for rejecting these options.
Commenting on why women may not be taking advantage of all of the financial tools available, Marjorie Alfus, chair at the Centre for Women`s Business Research, said: "This may be due to a lack of knowledge about how to use these products or how to obtain them as well as a preference for avoiding debt."
"If we are to ensure that women-owned enterprises achieve their full economic potential, we must expand the financial coaching and training for all women business owners."
A study by Barclays Bank in October 2006 revealed that an increasing number of women are starting their own businesses in the UK.
