Bailiffs `could enter homes to collect parking debts`
10/04/2007
Britons with parking debts could face the prospect of bailiffs entering their homes to collect the money, it has emerged.
Legislation currently under consideration by MPs could result in parking fines being put on the same level as criminal penalties, the Telegraph reports.
Proposals included in the Tribunal Courts and Enforcement Bill have alarmed some motoring groups, who are concerned about the enhanced power to collect on these debts.
Franklin Price, a solicitor who has represented a number of motorists, told the publication that "if bailiffs are given these powers they are going to be forcing their way into people`s houses".
Under current law, bailiffs can seize a car or confiscate goods from someone who has got into debt through parking tickets.
Last month, constitutional affairs minister Vera Baird introduced restrictions on bailiffs` powers which she said would protect "the most vulnerable" debtors at risk of unscrupulous agents.
