Consumer debt levels `soar`
30/03/2007
Consumer debts increased by a third last year, according to the Registry Trust.
Almost 844,000 county court judgments (CCJs) for £2 billion in unpaid debts were issued in 2006, the trust reveals.
This reflects a 33 per cent increase on the 635,000 CCJs issued in 2005, the study indicates.
Malcolm Hurlston, of the Registry Trust, explained that the rise in CCJs may be due to creditors increasingly trying to claim the homes of people with debt problems.
He said: "People owed money are seeking judgments as the necessary first step to obtaining charging orders against debtors` properties."
It is the second year in which the trust has shown that CCJs have risen.
The Registry Trust records money judgments, such as CCJs, administration orders and child support agency liability orders.
It was established by parliament in 1852 "to enable parties to ascertain the credit of tradesmen and others whom they might be inclined to trust, by searching to see if there were any judgments registered".
