Council tax is `popular topic` for UK spenders
19/03/2007
Those looking to get out of debt may be interested in new findings which show that council tax is the most popular financial topic discussed between friends and family.
Research from Unbiased.co.uk found that 65 per cent talk about the levy, which could rise this year and cause a further financial strain for homeowners looking to clear debt from their records.
House prices were the next most talked-about subject, amid recent reports that some mortgage providers are to allow borrowing of up to five times a salary in order for people to get on the property ladder.
However, while consumers may discuss such issues, David Elms, chief executive of unbiased.co.uk, said that more understanding and guidance on council tax could help people to save money in the longer term.
"The onus is, more than ever, on the individual to get their financial affairs in order," he maintained. "When it comes to tax, there are a number of simple steps people can take to reduce the amount the Chancellor takes from them."
In related news, this Wednesday could see a number of new monetary schemes announced in the 2007 Budget.
