`Unemployment could lead to debt` in seaside towns
24/08/2009
People who live and work in Britain`s seaside towns may be more likely to require a debt management solution than ever before, thanks to a surge in unemployment.
New statistics analysed by the Trades Union Congress (TUC) indicate that while unemployment across the UK has risen by 81 per cent over the past 12 months, claimant levels in many seaside towns are well above this figure.
In Bournemouth, for example, the number of unemployment claimants has increased by 130 per cent since July last year, while in south Dorset, levels have jumped by 113 per cent.
Weston-Super-Mare, Harwich, Clacton-on-Sea and North Thanet have also been affected by rising unemployment rates, the analysis found.
Brendan Barber, general secretary of the TUC, said that the problem is particularly affecting young people, who are finding it "almost impossible to make the right start to their working lives".
He added that the new unemployment figures, which are based on data compiled by the Office for National Statistics, show that the situation is at a "crisis level".
