Business awards to praise `people who triumphed over debt`

People who overcame barriers including bankruptcy and debt to start their own businesses will be honoured this autumn.
A partnership between Barclays Bank and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the Trading Places awards aim to acknowledge individuals who have tackled problems, such as debt and other personal finance troubles, to build a successful small enterprise.
The top prize in last year`s awards was won by a woman who rose above bankruptcy and homelessness to open her own hair salon.
To be eligible for recognition, individual must have been trading for at least three months but no longer than three years and have a yearly turnover of under £1 million.
Introducing the awards, Barclays` marketing director for local business, John Davis, said: "Trading Places is a celebration of unsung heroes who, in spite of great personal challenges, have taken steps to establish a sustainable business and in doing so changed the direction of their lives for the better."
Awards totalling £32,500 will be given to ten finalists.
