Debt stops two in five from saving
05/06/2009
According to Scottish Widows, recent research shows that 85% of Britons surveyed have `no money to save` - up from 50% the previous year.
As The Daily Mail reports, 42% said their debts kept them from saving - up from 10% the previous year.
The findings of Scottish Widows` research seem to contradict recent reports by the British Bankers` Association, which found that the amount consumers have deposited with high street banks has risen recently.
A spokesperson for Debt Advisers Direct said: "Saving for a `rainy day` is an important part of protecting against unexpected costs - people with some money in the bank are much more likely to be able to cope with sudden expenses without running into debt.
"At a time like now, it is particularly important to try and save money each month. Anyone who cannot afford to save money and is struggling to manage their debts should contact a professional debt adviser."
