Consumers take up gardening to avoid debt
05/06/2009
Garden centre sales figures suggest that British consumers are increasingly turning their hand to gardening as they attempt to get through the recession and avoid debt.
Wyevale Garden Centres said its year-on-year sales had grown by 50%, according to Marketingmagazine.co.uk.
Meanwhile, gardening and home improvement giants Homebase and B&Q have both reported significant rises in sales of seeds.
Last month, a YouGov survey revealed that 38% of people who were growing their own vegetables were doing so because they could no longer afford to buy organic food.
A spokesperson for Debt Advisers Direct said: "The recession has encouraged more people to find clever ways of saving money and avoiding debt, and gardening is one way of doing that.
"Gardening can be a cheap and relaxing hobby, so even people who are repaying existing debt can benefit."
