MP fears for people in debt

Amid stories about rising bankruptcy rates in his constituency, an MP is calling for more responsibility from lenders, it has emerged.
Individual bankruptcies in Bradford in the last three months of 2006 were 85 per cent higher than in 2005, the Telegraph and Argus reports.
Bradford West MP Marsha Singh is urging banks to be responsible toward their customers and maintain free banking in order to prevent a further rise in bad debt.
Mr Singh told the publication: "Given that Bradford is one of the highest for people in the country getting into debt, I am very concerned.
"People are being given loans they cannot afford and banks are making huge profits."
Insolvencies throughout the UK during the last quarter of 2006 jumped 44.1 per cent from the same period in 2005, according to the Insolvency Service.
It was announced yesterday that a panel of MPs plan to investigate the future of free banking, as well as bank competition.
