Credit card holders `paying off debts each month`
22/05/2009
The latest credit card spending figures from payments association APACS suggest that more card holders are only spending as much as they can afford to pay off at the end of the month, according to Equifax.
The credit reference agency believes this may be a sign that British consumers are focusing on paying off their debts in case they are made redundant.
Neil Munroe, Equifax`s external affairs director, said: "Maybe there is an expectation that their job may not be as secure as it was and therefore people don`t want to be caught out with no job and [high] borrowing."
He added that concerns about debt could also explain the rising popularity of debit card spending.
"People are moving to using what they know they have rather than borrowing on the basis that they have to pay [the debt] back later," he said.
