Biggest rise in retail sales in three years
13/05/2009
The latest figures from the British Retail Consortium (BRC) have revealed the best annual retail sales growth for three years last month, adding to speculation that the economy may be starting to recover.
Overall retail sales were up by 6.3% in April, compared with the same month in 2008, with like-for-like sales up by 4.6% over the same period.
The figures could indicate the beginnings of a recovery in the economy, following a downward trend in sales over the past 18 months as consumers made fewer purchases, trying to avoid getting into debt or other financial problems.
A spokesperson for Debt Advisers Direct said: "The figures may suggest that consumers are becoming more confident, but it will be some time before we can see if this really is the start of a recovery."
