Consumer confidence rises
11/05/2009
Nationwide`s Consumer Confidence Index recorded a rise in April, suggesting that attitudes amongst UK consumers may be becoming increasingly positive.
According to Nationwide, consumer confidence in April rose by 8 points compared with the previous month, continuing the upward trend seen in 2009 so far.
In comparison, consumer confidence had shown a distinct downward trend throughout 2008, most likely due to a combination of an unstable economy and rising unemployment.
A spokesperson for Debt Advisers Direct said: "The latest figures suggest that people are expecting the economy to start making a recovery in the reasonably near future - although the Present Situation Index, rising just one point, shows that people are still concerned about their current circumstances.
"There could still be difficult times ahead, and people should be looking to protect their finances - for example, by saving money or by overpaying their debts when they can afford it."
