Only one in five students expects to have a job on graduation
01/05/2009
New research into employment expectations amongst students has suggested that just one in five final-year university students expects to have a job lined up by the time they graduate.
The study by High Fliers Research, which interviewed 16,357 final-year students, showed that only 15% of students had received a definite job offer in March this year, compared with 20% last year.
Overall, 36% of final-year students expected to find a job at some point this year, while 21% expected to have secured a job by the time they graduate.
A spokesperson for Debt Advisers Direct said: "With the job market becoming increasingly difficult, prospects for graduate employment are weaker than in previous years.
"Students may not have to worry about repaying their student loans until they are earning enough, but in light of limited employment opportunities, it may be a good idea to avoid other forms of credit that may require regular repayment in the short term, since failing to find employment while owing money could easily lead to debt problems."
