Rise in March retail sales

UK retail sales rose in March, following February`s sharp fall, according to new figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Retail sales volumes were 1.5% higher in March than in the same month in the previous year, and were also 0.3% higher than February`s figures.

Sales in the entire first quarter of the year were up by 0.9% on the previous quarter.

A spokesperson for Debt Advisers Direct commented: "Retail sales have been hit hard by the economic downturn, with many people looking to protect their finances and avoid getting into debt.

"These figures may suggest that consumers are becoming slightly more confident."
