Debt: youngsters` number 1 fear
27/04/2009
Youngsters in Briton are particularly worried about debt, according to Community Service Volunteers (CSV), a charity which believes that `everyone should be able to take part in the life of their community`.
The Youth Future Fears UK survey, commissioned by CSV and Tesco as part of the Agents4Change campaign, found that 48% of the 16-25 year-olds questioned saw debt as one of their biggest future fears.
In other words, fear of debt came ahead of worries about unemployment (40%), violent crime (38%) and global warming (30%).
There are, of course, regional variations: in the South West, for instance, 59% are most concerned about debt.
Sue Farrington, of the Agents4Change campaign, stated that: "Young people have genuine fears for the future but they are not powerless to overcome them. They can help keep our streets safer by mentoring young people at risk of offending, give advice on managing debt by volunteering to teach budgeting and financial skills and help combat global warming by taking part in recycling or conservation projects."
Lucy Neville-Rolfe, Tesco director of corporate and legal affairs: "It was interesting and a little disturbing to read this survey that suggested young people were so concerned about debt, unemployment and crime."
