Women `expecting pension shortfalls`
09/04/2009
Many women in the UK are expecting pension shortfalls, new research suggests.
Figures produced by Prudential indicate that the 2.76 million women who plan to retire this year will receive an average of £6,642 a year less than their male counterparts - potentially putting some at risk of debt problems.
According to Prudential, women will receive an average annual pension of £13,671, while men will get around £20,313.
Karin Brown, annuities business director at the firm, said: "It`s still a shock to see so many women retiring at such a disadvantage to their male colleagues, despite all we know about the causes of pension discrepancies between men and women."
She added that the increasing divorce rate could also mean that fewer women are left with a spouse`s pension to fall back on.
Recently, uSwitch.com suggested that the 1.7 million pensioners relying on property to fund their retirement may be left with financial difficulties because of the recent drop in the values of homes.
