30% of young people `think debt is a reality of life`
03/04/2009
A survey looking into the effectiveness of financial education has found that three in ten young people believe getting into debt is a `reality of life`.
The Natwest research also found that around 39% of people thought that they would have less than £10,000 of debt after leaving university. The current average level of student debt actually stands at £12,700.
A spokesperson for Debt Advisers Direct said: "Credit can be a very useful means of coping with unexpected expenses, but it doesn`t have to be a `reality of life`. Many people find they rarely need to borrow, and many who do are able to repay it promptly.
"Young people can be particularly vulnerable when it comes to debt, as they have less experience with money and are likely to earn a lower income. Anyone who finds themselves in trouble with debt should seek professional debt advice as soon as possible."
