03/04/2009
New figures from the Bank of England have shown that the total level of personal debt in the UK rose by £38bn in the 12 months to the end of February.
The UK`s total personal debt stood at £1.458 trillion at the end of February, £1.227 trillion (around 84%) of which was made up of secured debt.
However, the statistics also showed that the rate at which personal debt is growing has slowed, compared with February 2008, when the year-on-year total had increased by around £111bn.
A spokesperson for Debt Advisers Direct said: "Although the growth is slowing, the level of debt has continued to rise - during a time in which many people are looking to reduce their debts.
"Anyone worried about their situation should contact an expert debt adviser as soon as possible to discuss how they can reduce their debts."
